Nia's SBE Diary

Monday, 4th April 2022

I arrived at SK Taman Senangan as early as 7 a.m. After meeting with the headmistress and explaining all of my SBE assignments in detail, I followed my mentor to her English class, 4 Giga, from 9.15 a.m. until 10 a.m. to observe how English lessons are conducted in a physical classroom environment. Later, I talked with her about creating a lesson plan for her class the following day. During recess, I worked on finishing the lesson plan for Year 4 Topic 2 until it was time for me to clock out. Fortunately, I was able to show her before leaving for the day, and she graciously agreed to use the modified version of the lesson plan. She also informs me that I may relief Year 4 classes tomorrow to run a test for my EDUP3063i Assessment in Education coursework.

I went to 4 Tera and 4 Giga to get a total of 30 students to take the Year 4: Topic 2 test that I was going to give. I had to give the test sheets to two classes because each class only had half of the pupils as they came to school in turns to avoid the crowd in the classroom. During recess, I marked the papers. No one got full marks, but I was amazed to see 60% of them scored more than 50%. Despite only three weeks of school in 2022, the pupils seemed to display a high level of concentration during English lessons.

Today, I assisted the teachers on duty in monitoring the students' attendance at school because they had classes in the first period. I made certain that all students checked their temperature and sanitised their hands before entering their respective classrooms.

During recess, I went into 6 Mega and interviewed a pupil about her experiences with physical classes (PdP) and online classes (PdPr).

I also had the opportunity to speak with the teacher in charge of the students' well-being. I discovered that there are various types of financial assistance available to students, such as Early School Aid, which provides RM150 cash to pupils from families earning RM3000 or less. There is also assistance in the form of RM150 vouchers to buy stationery and school clothes given from ZAKAT Penang to Muslim students from families earning RM2000 and below. I believe this information will be useful to me because who knows, maybe one day I will be in the same position.

I went to relieve 4 Mega after getting permission from the senior assistant teacher of student affairs. Because their Maths teacher was absent, I led an English activity with the pupils. I played a game in which I gave them a place (e.g.: hospital) and instructed Group A and Group B to say the objects/nouns found there, such as 'nurse,' 'counter,' 'patient,' and so on. I also went to relieve the class 5 Zeta after recess. I didn't do any English-related activities because their Art teacher had already assigned homework that needed to be completed during the class period. Fortunately, the students were well-behaved and focused on their work.

On my last day of SBE, I had the opportunity to accompany a Year 1 student who refused to attend his classes. His classroom happened to be next to Mrs Shahida's, and she invited me to join her class. I was astounded by how well she managed the class while leading a singing session with the pupils. I learned that it is important to begin a lesson by establishing rules for pupils to follow in order to give them the impression that we teachers have strict personalities, even if we will be doing a lot of fun, singing, or role-play activities together later on.

Before I clocked out today, I thanked all the teachers, especially my mentor who have been assisting, guiding me and sharing knowledge with me during my SBE week.
